If you\u2019ve missed our previous Tips of the Week, be sure to <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"\/staging\/category\/tip-of-the-week\/\">check them out here<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shapes are often overlooked but useful tools that I use for formatting documents on an almost daily basis. They are especially great for formatting legal or educational documents, which are most often translated for immigration, visa requirements, or when applying for school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, diplomas, and transcripts usually have one or several official seals on them and the agencies requesting these kinds of translations will usually require that the format of the translation be true to that of the original document. For that reason, here at <a href=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/\">Translation Excellence<\/a>, we use shapes to recreate these stamps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s start with the following example and then we\u2019ll walk through how to recreate it. You are presented with the following seal and told that the company does not want you to translate their company name or slogan:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10963\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1.&nbsp;The screenshots in the blog post were taken in the 2013 version of Microsoft Office. While the layout of Word in previous versions is somewhat different, the steps to take are the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inserting Shapes in Your Document<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">2. Click \u201cInsert\u201d and then \u201cShapes.\u201d<\/span> Many people wonder, how to draw shapes in Word or what are the different shapes in MS Word. This is the place to start for creating a range of shapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/2-300x124-300x124-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10965\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">3. Select the shape you would like, in this case it will be a circle (oval).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/3-300x175-300x175-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10966\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">4. Draw the shape. Hold down the \u201cShift\u201d key while drawing the shape if you would like the shape to keep the same proportions. This is especially useful if you want to create a circle or square.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10967\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Customizing the Shape\u2019s Color and Outline<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">5. Select the shape outline color under \u201cFormat.\u201d To mimic the seal, we&#8217;ll use the dark blue under \u201cStandard Colors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/5-296x300-296x300-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10968\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">6. Select the shape fill color under \u201cFormat.\u201d In this case, we will select \u201cNo Fill\u201d since we want the inside background of the stamp to be white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/6-300x289-300x289-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10969\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choosing Layout Options for Shapes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">7. Select the text wrapping option you would like by clicking on the \u201cLayout Options\u201d button. This button appears when you have the object selected. If you do not see it, you can also select it by right clicking the image and going to \u201cWrap Text.\u201d In this case, we will be selecting \u201cBehind Text\u201d since we want to be able to move the stamp anywhere on the page, regardless of whether there is text or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/7-2-300x243-300x243-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10970\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/7-238x300-238x300-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10971\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adding Text and Final Adjustments to Shapes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">8. Add text to the stamp by right clicking the shape and selecting \u201cAdd Text.\u201d The cursor will then appear within the shape and you can type the text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/8-300x225-300x225-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10972\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">9. Change the color of the text by highlighting the text with your cursor and then right-clicking with your mouse. This will bring up a box where you can select \u201cFont Color.\u201d In this example we will use the dark blue under \u201cStandard Colors\u201d (same as the shape\u2019s outline).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/9-300x213-300x213-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10973\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">10. If it is a different shaped seal you can use the rectangle shape (if it is a square just hold down shift!), the rounded rectangle shape, or any other one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bonus Exercise<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original seal was actually two circles with \u201cTranslation Excellence &#8211; Bridging Human Beings\u201d in the outside ring and also contained within the second circle. While it would generally not be required to recreate this in a <a href=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/translation-services\/\">translation<\/a>, try it out and test your new skills with shapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you have a suggestion for a Tip of the Week?
