This week I\u2019m going to introduce you to Word Text Boxes.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly to <a href=\"\/staging\/shapes-in-microsoft-word\/\">Word Shapes<\/a>, text boxes are extremely useful for formatting documents for the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They draw attention to text<\/li>\n<li>They allow you to move the text around<\/li>\n<li>They allow you to format the text in new ways<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By the end of this post, you\u2019ll be able to quickly create and insert text boxes into your document, and then format them. Let\u2019s get going!<\/p>\n<p>First, we need to locate where to insert text boxes. Click on \u201cInsert\u201d and you\u2019ll be able to find the button pretty easily. Here\u2019s what it looks like in Word 2013 when you hover over the icon with your mouse:<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10888 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/19-300x250-300x250-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" \/>When you click on \u201cText Box\u201d you\u2019ll immediately notice that there are quite a few built-in text box templates (and you can even find more online or build your own). Figure out what will work best for this particular project and click on it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10890 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/21-191x300-191x300-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"300\" \/>I chose the standard \u201cSimple Text Box.\u201d While it really is simple, I\u2019ve found that it satisfies most of the daily uses that I have for text boxes. Here\u2019s what the template looks like once it\u2019s inserted:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10891 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/31-300x173-300x173-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" \/>Then, just add the text. Here I\u2019ll be recreating a stamp that reads \u201cBlah Blah Blah.\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10892 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/41-300x80-300x80-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"80\" \/>Now I\u2019ll center the text in the text box and resize the text box to make it look a little bit better (Check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/microsoft-word-shortcuts-basics-2\/\">first tip of the week<\/a> for text alignment and other shortcut keys!). To resize the text box, click on one of the little squares on the box\u2019s border and drag it to fit your specifications.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10896 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/51-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"105\" \/>Now you can select a wrapping option under \u201cLayout.\u201d Here I\u2019ll be using \u201cBehind Text,\u201d which will allow me to move the text box anywhere on the page. You can try out the different text wrapping options to see what will work best for your translation or other project.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10893 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/61-300x141-300x141-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"141\" \/>See? I can just drag the text box over to the left now:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10894 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/71-300x78-300x78-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"78\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can also edit the color of the border or the fill of the text boxes in the same way as you can with shapes, please reference <a href=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/shapes-in-microsoft-word\/\">this blog post<\/a> for information on how to edit this. Hint: Click on the text box and then go to the \u201cFormat\u201d section of the top menu bar.<\/p>\n<p>Now, what if you\u2019re translating a birth certificate that has a vertical or diagonal stamp, or even if the stamp is horizontal but upside down on the original? Well, Word has you covered. Simply go to \u201cFormat\u201d and then click on \u201cText Direction\u201d to change the direction of the text.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10895 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/81-300x169-300x169-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/>Here is the text box rotated 270\u00b0.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10897 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/translationexcellence.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/91-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"104\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As with most other features in Word, there is more than one way to rotate a text box. Do you see the little arrow above the text box in the above screenshot? If you click on that, you can actually drag the text box around with much more precision.<\/p>\n<p>Bonus Tip: Hold down \u201cShift\u201d while rotating the text box to constrain the rotation to increments of 15\u00b0.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, text boxes are treated like shapes and much of the editing that can be done is the same as with shapes. The main benefit of using text boxes instead of shapes lies in the templates that are provided by Word, however it usually is a little faster to create text boxes.
