The Serbian language belongs to the South Slavic group of languages within the Indo-European family. It evolved from Old Church Slavonic, with its modern form shaped by the cultural and political history of the Balkans, especially during and after the breakup of Yugoslavia. Serbian became standardized in the 19th century and has since been used in literature, media, and education. Sinhalese is an Indo-Aryan language with origins dating back over 2,000 years. It was influenced by Sanskrit and Pali due to Sri Lanka’s long-standing Buddhist traditions. Over time, it developed its own unique script and literary identity. Sinhalese remains a core part of Sri Lankan identity and is one of the country’s two official languages.
Serbian is primarily spoken in Serbia, where it serves as the official language. It is also widely spoken and officially recognized in parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. Beyond these regions, Serbian is spoken by diaspora communities in countries such as Austria, Germany, Switzerland, the United States, Canada, and Australia. On the other hand, Sinhalese (Sinhala) is the primary and official language of Sri Lanka, where the majority of the population speaks it. Significant Sinhalese-speaking communities also exist in the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and the United States, largely due to migration and expatriate populations.
