FDA – Office of Criminal Investigation

WHAT THEY DO:

The FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations (OCI) is the law enforcement arm of the FDA. It’s responsible for investigating criminal activities that involve FDA-regulated products. This includes investigating cases of:

Counterfeit drugs: Fake or substandard medications.

Illicit drug distribution: Illegal distribution of prescription drugs.

Food safety violations: Adulterated or misbranded food products.

Medical device fraud: Fraudulent marketing or sale of medical devices.

Cosmetics fraud: Misleading claims or dangerous ingredients in cosmetic products.

OCI works to protect public health by identifying and prosecuting individuals and organizations that engage in illegal activities related to FDA-regulated products.

THE CHALLENGE

The project required the translation of intricate, handwritten Polish documents from diverse dialects, the transcription of clandestine audio recordings captured by undercover operatives, and the provision of real-time language interpretation during high-stakes extradition negotiations between the United States and Norway.

THE SOLUTION

To successfully complete this complex task, we assembled a team of highly skilled linguists with expertise in various Polish dialects and English. Our team meticulously analyzed cryptic handwritten documents, identifying and researching specific dialectal variations to ensure accurate translation. Advanced transcription software was employed to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of transcribing covert audio recordings. By listening attentively to the recordings, our team meticulously transcribed dialogue, including speaker identification and nonverbal cues.

In addition, our team provided real-time language interpretation services during high-stakes extradition negotiations between the U.S. and Norway. By leveraging advanced interpretation techniques, our linguists ensured accurate and fluent communication, bridging language barriers and facilitating effective dialogue. Throughout the entire process, we adhered to strict confidentiality protocols and maintained open communication with our clients to ensure their complete satisfaction.

THE RESULTS

TE’s translations and transcriptions were key evidence in the conviction of the defendant in a U.S. federal court.
