Fuzhounese at a glance
- Language family
- Eastern Min (Min Dong), a branch of the Min group of Chinese languages[1] source
- Where it is spoken
- Fuzhou and the surrounding counties of Fujian province, China, including Changle, Fuqing, and Lianjiang[2] source
- Understood by Mandarin speakers?
- No. Fuzhounese is not mutually intelligible with Mandarin or with Hokkien[2] source
- Writing
- No formal written standard; documents use Chinese characters. Foochow Romanized, a 19th-century missionary script, survives mainly in churches[3] source
- In the United States
- Tens of thousands of Fuzhounese have settled in New York’s Chinatown since the 1980s. Census language tables count them under “Chinese,” so the community’s size is not measured[4] source
- In immigration courts
- “Foo Chow” was among the ten most common languages in U.S. immigration court cases in fiscal years 2009 through 2012[5] source
What Fuzhounese work takes
Spoken and written are different jobs
Interpreting must be in Fuzhounese itself. Documents, however, are translated into standard written Chinese, so confirm whether your readers use Simplified or Traditional characters, and consider an interpreter to read key documents aloud for people who read little.
Mandarin is not a substitute
Many Fuzhounese speakers also speak Mandarin, but not all, and older or less-schooled speakers may not follow it well. In legal and medical settings, ask the person which language they understand best before booking.
Confirm the variety at intake
Fuzhounese includes close local varieties such as Fuqing and Changle, which are not fully identical. In one asylum case, a federal appeals court sent the matter back after a Fuqing speaker’s hearing was run through a Mandarin interpreter. Ask where the person is from and record the language they choose.

Fuzhounese translation and interpreting FAQs
Is Fuzhounese the same as Mandarin?
No. Fuzhounese belongs to the Min branch of Chinese and is spoken very differently from Mandarin, so a Mandarin interpreter is not a reliable substitute. Many Fuzhounese speakers also know Mandarin, but ask the person which language they understand best.
How do you translate documents for Fuzhounese speakers?
Into standard written Chinese, the written form Fuzhounese speakers read, in Simplified or Traditional characters as your readers need. For people who read little, a Fuzhounese interpreter can read a document aloud and explain it.
Can you provide Fuzhounese interpreters by phone or video?
Yes, by appointment, and on-site where available. Because Fuzhounese is a less common language, book as early as you can so we can match the right interpreter.
Do you provide certified Fuzhounese translation?
Yes. Certified Fuzhounese translations include a signed statement that the translation is complete and accurate, the format courts, schools, and immigration authorities such as USCIS require.
How much does Fuzhounese translation cost?
Price depends on the word count, subject matter, deadline, and whether you need certification. Send your files for a fixed quote and delivery date, with no obligation.
