Amharic, in its own words

አማርኛ

Amarəñña

Amharic is written left to right in the Ge’ez script, called fidel, where each character stands for a consonant plus a vowel.

One consonant, seven forms

Fidel is an abugida: each character fuses a consonant with a vowel, so one consonant appears in seven shapes. Amharic has 34 basic characters, and with their forms the script runs to some 288 letters. A translator has to read the vowel in the shape, and your systems have to display every shape.

  • ለläfirst form
  • ሉlusecond form
  • ሊlithird form
  • ላlafourth form
  • ሌlefifth form
  • ልləsixth form

The seventh form is ሎ (lo). Ethiopic has its own Unicode block, so a font without it shows empty boxes instead of text.

Amharic interpreters

Our Amharic interpreters work in person, by phone, and by video, in consecutive and simultaneous modes. We match each assignment to the setting, with court-certified or credentialed interpreters where the work requires them, send briefing materials ahead so interpreters arrive prepared, and assign a team for long or simultaneous sessions. Every Amharic interpreter is background-checked and bound by a confidentiality agreement.

Amharic in Colorado

Our headquarters is in Aurora, in the Denver metro area, home to most of Colorado’s Ethiopian-born residents, so we schedule on-site Amharic interpreters across Colorado and nationwide.

What good Amharic translation takes

  • ፡።

    Fidel that survives every system

Amharic needs fonts and software that support the Ethiopic Unicode block, including its own punctuation, such as the word separator ፡ and the full stop ።. Web forms, PDFs, and case management systems without that support turn Amharic into boxes or question marks, so proof the final file and test any platform before launch.

    Ethiopian dates and times

Ethiopia’s calendar has twelve 30-day months plus a short thirteenth month, Pagumen, and its year number runs seven or eight years behind the Gregorian year, so a date on an Ethiopian document must be converted, not copied. Clock times differ too: the Ethiopian day is counted from dawn, so 1 o’clock is 7 a.m., and an interpreter should confirm which clock a speaker means.

  • ኀይሌገብረ ሥላሴ

    Names without a family surname

Ethiopian names have no inherited surname: a person’s given name is followed by the father’s given name, and often the grandfather’s. Haile Gebrselassie is properly called Haile; Gebrselassie is a patronymic. In the United States the father’s or grandfather’s name usually becomes the surname, so match names to the person’s own records, not to relatives.

Amharic is not every Ethiopian’s first language

Amharic is the most widely spoken language in Ethiopia and a lingua franca in its cities, but Ethiopia has dozens of languages. Speakers from Tigray or Oromia may prefer Tigrinya or Oromo, especially for testimony or medical history, so ask which language the person wants. Tigrinya shares the Ge’ez script but is a separate language.

Amharic translation and interpreting FAQs

How do you handle Ethiopian calendar dates on certified translations?

We convert each date to the Gregorian calendar and make the conversion clear on the translation, so a USCIS officer or registrar is not left reconciling a year that looks seven or eight years off. Tell us if you also need the original Ethiopian date shown.

How are Ethiopian names handled on a certified translation?

Exactly as they appear on the source document, in the same order: given name, father’s name, and grandfather’s name where present. We romanize the Amharic consistently and can follow the spelling on a passport or prior filing so the name matches your other records.

Are there certified Amharic court interpreters?

Not in the sense the term usually means. The federal court interpreter certification exam is offered for Spanish only, and the Colorado Judicial Branch certifies interpreters in eighteen languages, none of them Amharic; for Amharic, Colorado courts credential interpreters instead. When a court sets a requirement for Amharic, tell us the court and we match the interpreter to it.

Is Amharic the same as Tigrinya?

No. Both are Ethio-Semitic languages written in the Ge’ez script, but they are separate languages. Do not substitute an Amharic interpreter for a Tigrinya speaker unless the person confirms they are comfortable in Amharic.

Do Amharic dialects matter for translation and interpreting?

Less than the choice of language. Amharic’s regional varieties, such as those of Gondar, Gojjam, Wollo, Shewa, and Addis Ababa, are mutually intelligible, with minor variations. The bigger question is whether the person’s strongest language is Amharic at all, or Tigrinya, Oromo, or another language of Ethiopia.

Do you provide Amharic interpreters for medical and legal settings?

Yes. We schedule Amharic interpreters on-site, by phone, and by video for appointments, hearings, depositions, and meetings, matched to the setting and to any credential the court or provider requires.

Do you provide certified Amharic translation?

Yes. Certified Amharic translations include a signed statement that the translation is complete and accurate, the format courts, schools, and immigration authorities such as USCIS require.

How much does Amharic translation cost?

Price depends on the word count, subject matter, deadline, and whether you need certification. Send your files for a fixed quote and delivery date, with no obligation.
